Your practical guide to preparing your trip to Martinique

What you need to know before you go

Martinique is a dream destination: white sand beaches, lush forests, colorful villages, and Creole cuisine. But before you pack your bags, it's best to know some essential information to fully enjoy your stay. Formalities, weather, tips, and transportation: here's everything you need to know.

1. Administrative formalities

  • For French and EU nationals : No visa is required. A valid identity card is sufficient, but a passport is recommended if you are transiting through a third country.
  • For non-Europeans : a valid passport is required and, depending on nationality, a visa may be required (inquire at the consulate or on the French government website).
  • Health : No mandatory vaccinations, but consider travel insurance including repatriation and medical expenses.

2. The best time to go

Martinique has a tropical climate with two main seasons:

  • Dry season (Lent) : December to April. Sunny weather, pleasant temperatures (25-28°C) and less humidity. This is the most popular (and most expensive) time of year.
  • Wet season (Hivernage) : June to November. More rain and cyclone risk between August and October, but more attractive prices and lush nature.
💡 Tip: May and early June are often a good compromise between favorable weather and lower prices.

3. On-site transport

  • Car rental : essential if you want to explore the island freely (roads are sometimes winding but well maintained). Book in advance, especially in high season
💡 Our suggestion: JUMBO CARS which is a 2-minute walk from the hotel entrance https://maps.app.goo.gl/qPHvDc58BshYUnJz9
  • Public transport : A few buses operate, but the schedules are irregular. This is especially useful for short journeys.
  • Taxis and shuttles : Available but relatively expensive.
💡 Tip: Choose a small car to navigate narrow streets and save on fuel.

4. Accommodation and budget

Martinique offers a wide choice: hotels, lodges, seasonal rentals, guest rooms... that's good, we have the ideal one on hand🤗 ( contact us )

5. Practical tips for a successful stay

  • Currency : The Euro (€) is the local currency, bank cards are widely accepted.
  • Language : French is the official language, Martinican Creole is commonly spoken.
  • Time difference : 5 hours in winter and 6 hours in summer compared to mainland France.
  • Telephone/internet : no additional roaming for French packages (as in mainland France).
  • Respect for the environment : Martinique's nature is fragile. Respect protected areas and do not collect coral or shells.

6. Not to be missed on site

  • The legendary beaches: Anse Dufour, Grande Anse d'Arlet, Les Salines…
  • The Mount Pelée volcano and its hikes.
  • The Balata Garden and its botanical collections.
  • The colorful markets of Fort-de-France.
  • Rum distilleries for tasting.

7. Essentials to pack in your suitcase

To avoid unpleasant surprises, here is a list of essentials to pack in your luggage:

  • sunscreen (the sun is strong in the tropics).
  • Mosquito repellent ( especially in the evening or in humid areas).
  • Hat or cap + sunglasses.
  • swimsuit(s) and beach towel.
  • Sandals/ beach shoes and walking shoes for hiking.
  • Lightweight raincoat or poncho for tropical downpours.
  • Small first aid kit (bandages, antiseptic, personal medications).
  • Waterproof bag to protect your belongings during boat trips.
  • Photocopies or scans of your papers in case of loss.
  • electrical adapter is required if you are coming from France (identical sockets).
  • A mask and snorkel to admire the fish and underwater life

In summary

Preparing for your trip to Martinique means anticipating a few simple formalities, choosing the right time of year, planning your travels, and equipping yourself with some handy tips.
